If you were helping a parent or loved one choose a senior living community, where would you start?
For most families, the answer is Google.
A quick search. A glance at the star rating. Maybe a few photos.
To illustrate why looking beyond the Google rating matters, let's compare four real senior living communities from across the country. Each currently has the exact same 4.5-star Google rating.
‍
If all you knew was the Google rating, would you feel comfortable saying one community was stronger than another?
Probably not.
At first glance, Crown Pointe, Town Village Sterling Heights, The Residence at Glastonbury, and Derian Place Senior Living appear remarkably similar.

If we stopped here, we'd probably conclude these communities offer roughly the same online reputation.
But most families don't stop here.
‍
The next thing many people do is click into the reviews.
Here are the three most recently posted Google reviews for each community.

Already, some differences begin to emerge.
Crown Pointe and Town Village Sterling Heights continue to receive glowing feedback.
The Residence at Glastonbury has a recent 2-star review mixed in with two 5-star reviews.
Derian Place Senior Living has a 1-star review as its most recently posted review, followed by two older 5-star reviews.
Does that mean Derian Place is a poor community?
Not necessarily.
A single review rarely tells the whole story.
But it should encourage us to keep looking.
‍
Receiving positive reviews is important.
Receiving them consistently over time is even more meaningful.
Let's look at how recently each community received its most recent positive Google review.

Now the picture becomes more interesting.
Crown Pointe received a positive review in the last week.
Town Village Sterling Heights received one two months ago.
Interestingly, The Residence at Glastonbury actually received its most recent positive review more recently than Town Village Sterling Heights.
At first glance, that might make Glastonbury appear healthier.
Meanwhile, Derian Place Senior Living hasn't received a positive review in more than two years.
That dramatically changes how we interpret the reviews we saw in the previous section.
But we're still looking at only one piece of the puzzle.
‍
One positive review is encouraging. A consistent stream of positive reviews is a much stronger indicator of ongoing resident and family satisfaction.
Now let's compare how many positive Google reviews each community has generated during the past twelve months.

This is also where Crown Pointe separates itself from the rest of the group. With 16 positive Google reviews over the past year, it demonstrates the kind of consistent review generation that helps build and sustain an exceptional online reputation.
The distinction between Town Village Sterling Heights and The Residence at Glastonbury becomes much clearer.
Although Glastonbury received a positive review more recently, it has generated only two positive reviews during the past year—and one of its three most recently posted reviews was just 2 stars.
Town Village Sterling Heights, on the other hand, has generated five positive reviews during the same period, and all three of its most recently posted reviews are 5 stars.
‍
Families rarely choose a community based on a single number. Instead, they naturally piece together clues -- recent reviews, consistent praise, warning signs, and overall patterns -- to build confidence in their decision. This exercise simply mirrors that process using publicly available data.
Looking at one metric in isolation can be misleading. Looking at several together provides much better context.

Notice what hasn't changed.
Every community still has the exact same 4.5-star Google rating.
What has changed is our understanding of those communities.
Crown Pointe demonstrates exceptional consistency across every reputation indicator.
Town Village Sterling Heights also maintains a strong reputation, with only slightly less review activity.
The Residence at Glastonbury presents a more mixed picture. While it has earned a recent positive review, lower review volume and a recent 2-star review suggest that its momentum may be beginning to soften.
Derian Place Senior Living illustrates perhaps the biggest lesson of all. Despite maintaining a respectable 4.5-star Google rating, its recent review activity suggests a reputation that may no longer be reflected by its overall rating alone.
‍
Google ratings remain one of the most valuable tools families have when researching senior living communities. But they're also a snapshot of years of accumulated experiences distilled into a single number.
As this exercise demonstrates, communities with the exact same Google rating can tell very different stories once you look beneath the surface.
Review sentiment.
Review recency.
Review generation.
Each offers valuable insight on its own. Together, they provide a much more complete picture of a community's current reputation.
That's exactly what the Senior Living Reputation (SLR) Score is designed to do.
Not replace Google, but help operators understand what the Google rating alone can't fully reveal.
